Meet Valentino!

Valentino joined PRSDC available pugs on Valentines Day! He was turned in stray to the shelter in San Diego...12 years old, unable to walk and barely able to breathe, obese, with a raging ear infection and hematomas on his ears. His teeth - some so rotted with gunk that his foster was not sure if they were teeth or exposed and rotted jawbone.

He spent most of that first weekend attached to the oxygen concentrator while his foster mom pumped him full of rescue drugs to stave off the raging pneumonia that wanted to kill him. It was seriously touch and go as to whether or not he would make it. Needless to say, it was a really tough few days.

But turn the corner he did, and he is doing SO much better now! His foster mom is reducing his drugs and he has lost two pounds of the ten he needed to lose. He has ataxia, how bad we aren't sure yet as the excess weight makes it worse. BUT he does have full control of bowels and bladder. His lungs are badly damaged from chronic respiratory disease and he will always be very fragile that way. We are really hoping we can get him healthy enough to have those rotten teeth pulled, but he may just have to live with them. His ear infection is much better. Although shelter labeled him at 12 years old his experienced foster mom puts him at 8-10 but just has been really poorly cared for his whole life.

The rescue vet called in a prescription of Xanax to try to help his anxiety after she heard him barking as soon as anyone walks away from him.

He was also started on melatonin and L-theanine and they have helped quite a bit with the anxiety and as he has lost weight and is a bit more mobile, that helps too. He is still obsessively attached to his foster mom, and no other person can console him, but we and SHE thinks he will be okay once he is fully mobile.
